NFL Week 5 In Review: Dak, Alex And Raiders

NFL Week 5 In Review: Dak, Alex And Raiders

NFL fans finally got the action packed Sunday of football that they have been craving all along this abbreviated season.  It looked for a while there like we were not going to have an NFL season at all due to the COVID-19 crisis that is affecting almost every team to some extent.

The teams are taking every possible precaution against the invasive virus, but the season is moving forward, giving football fans a lot to be happy about.  Football fans got all the football they could take, and then some.  There were upsets and surprises that kept the action interesting all day long.

Cowboys Win, But Suffer Enormous Loss

The Dallas Cowboys were on the verge of losing the game all afternoon to the lowly New York Giants after the “G-Men” put up 14 points in the first quarter.  The Cowboys came right back in the second with 21 points and the game went on like that until Greg Zuerlein kicked a 34-yard field goal with no time on the clock to win the game for Dallas and make Jerry Jones and company very happy.

However, the Cowboys were dealt a crippling blow when quarterback Dak Prescott was tackled awkwardly and we all got to see, in vivid slow motion, that his foot was not where it was supposed to be anymore.  Prescott had to be carted off the field and went straight to a hospital in Arlington where surgery was performed last night on his broken ankle.  Football fans everywhere wish Dak all the best, but he will not be returning to the football field this season – and possibly even next.

Dak’s injury was all the more ironic considering that earlier in the day, Washington quarterback Alex Smith completed his remarkable comeback from his own horrific broken leg in 2018 to return to the field for the first time in almost two years, replacing the injured Kyle Allen in a loss to the Rams. Smith pretty much locked up Comeback Player of the Year just by taking the field, and hopefully Dak can follow the same example in his rehab and return.

The Raiders Overpower The Chiefs

The newly established Las Vegas Raiders went into Sunday´s contest with the powerful Kansas City Chiefs as 10.5 underdogs.  Not many sports fans gave Derek Carr and company much of a chance of beating the mighty Patrick Mahomes, who, even in defeat, managed to put up 340 yards passing and 2 touchdowns.  However, on this particular Sunday, the Raiders were just a little bit better.  They scored 40 points, including 16 in the final quarter to finally defeat the mighty Chiefs 40-32 with over bettors cashing in on the 72 points scored.

The Cleveland Browns made a big investment in Baker Mayfield a couple of years ago, and the early going was pretty rough for the young quarterback.  But the Browns came into Sunday´s contest at 3-1 and were starting to look like a football team with a future.  Patience finally paid off for the powers that be in Cleveland as Mayfield led the team, his team now, to a 32-23 victory over an Indianapolis Colts team now led by the venerable Phillip Rivers.

Fins Up! Falcons Down

Ryan Fitzpatrick led an inspired Miami Dolphins team to take on the San Francisco 49ers and thoroughly dominate last year’s Super Bowl contenders by a final score of 43-17, with Fitzpatrick passing for three touchdowns and racking up 350 yards in the air.

The Atlanta Falcons put on such a terrible show this Sunday that both the Head Coach and the GM were fired after the game.  Dan Quinn is now looking for a job along with GM Tom Dimitroff after the Falcons posted their fifth loss of the season against a Carolina Panthers team led by Teddy Bridgewater, who, week after week, is proving himself to be a viable NFL quarterback.  He will face the Chicago Bears next week for a real test of just how good this Carolina team is this year.

The Schedule Keeps Shifting

In addition to the regular Monday Night Football game, which this week features the Los Angeles Chargers paying a visit to New Orleans to take on Drew Brees and the Saints, we almost got a bonus game before the Monday Night feature.  Due to the COVID-19 problem, the game between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos was to be played today.  However, after already been moved to today, the game has been delayed once again, and will now be played next week.
