About the National Hockey League

The National Hockey League (otherwise known as the NHL) is a professional Ice Hockey League based in North America. It consists of 32 teams overall, with 25 of these in the United States of America and the other 7 located in Canada. This is the league, considered by most, to be the best ice hockey league in the world – and is one of the most popular and followed major professional sports leagues in North America.

The biggest and most coveted prize – also the oldest professional sports trophy in the country – is awarded every year to the winner of the playoff at the end of every season. Behind the NFL (National Football League), MLB (Major Basketball League), NBA (National Basketball Association) and the EPL (English Premier League), it is, by revenue, the fifth wealthiest pro sports league in the world.

The National Hockey League was first organized in November 1919 in Montreal. It was created as a reaction to the suspension of the operations of its preceding league, the National Hockey Association (NHA), which was founded in Ontario in Renfrew, Ontario in 1909. Straight away, the NHL managed to fill the void left by the NHA and became one of the league’s that played for the Stanley Cup, in what used to be a yearly interleague competition. However, after several mergers – and a few foldings, by 1926, the NHL was the only league left to compete for the Stanley Cup.

In the beginning, the NHL consisted of only four teams – all based in Canada, which was why it was labelled as ‘National’. However, in 1924, the NHL expanded into the US, with the inclusion of the Boston Bruins. Since this time, it has included both Canadian and American Hockey teams. Between 1947 and 1967, there were only six teams in the league – all nicknamed the ‘original six’. However, in the 1967 NHL expansion, the league added another six teams – and doubled in size. Later on, by 1974, they increased to 18 teams – and by 979 there were 21 teams. In the years between 1991 and 2000, there were another nine teams added, taking it up to 30. The final two teams were added in 2017 and 2021.

The headquarters of the NHL is located in Manhattan and have been since 1989- after relocating from Montreal.

The Stanley Cup is considered by the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) to be one of the most important championships in the sporting world. The league includes some of the most skilled players coming from all across the globe and consists of players from more than 20 different countries. Historically, the majority of players in the NHL hail from Canada, but now more players from America and Europe are joining up.

As such, the viewing figures from all over the world are increasing, and the number of international fans that follow the National Hockey League is increasing. No matter where you are in the world, our website brings you all the latest scores, every day of the week – Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat and Sunday, from October to April.

NHL Scores

Above, you can find all the scores from today’s NHL hockey games, constantly updated as soon as the action happens. Most major professional college and professional sports leagues in the United States break their games down into quarters and halves. However, the NHL is different – and the NHL scoreboard is shown as the first period, second period and third period and fourth period. The overall game is 60 minutes and each period consists of 20 minutes. As is the case with American professional sports, the game cannot end up as a draw or a stalemate – the result is either the team wins or loses… but how can the NHL prevent a score draw? Well, there are two ways in which they avoid a draw and create either a winner or loser.

Game Overtime and Shootouts

When you are looking at the scores here on our website, there might be times when you notice a ‘4’ or a ‘5’ beside the third period. This is the fourth period which is referred to as ‘overtime’. Overtime lasts 5 minutes – and the first team to score the ‘golden goal’ will be the winner. However, if this doesn’t happen, and the game is still a tie at the end of the fourth period then it will go into the 5th period – which is the shootout. Both teams are given three penalty shots to score and the team that scores the most wins. However, if this is also tied then it will go into sudden death – and will continue until a winner is declared.

How to Understand the Line

Beside all of the teams, you will see a number – which is the ‘rotation’. When you make your bet at one of our recommended online betting sites, you will be putting your money on the number associated with your preferred team. As is standard with the NHL, they will show their lines in the Money Line format. This means that you simply have to pick the winner of the game.

There is also the O/U bet – which means the ‘Over / Under’ or totals bet. This is where you bet on whether the total number of goals scored will be over or under the line as set by the bookmaker. Bettors can simply choose whether they go high or low – and then cheer on either the scorers or the defenders. However, it’s worth noting that the goals scored in the fifth period – shootout – will add just one goal to the total outcome.

Then there is the ATS – a very important feature on the NHL scoreboard and it is there for those bettors that want to wager on the Against the Spread result. The ATS allows you to bet on the underdog and get more chance of winning – so you can bet on your favourite team with a goal handicap as set by the bookie. Basically, the bookmaker will add a minus number or plus number beside the teams – and that is the amount of goals handicap given. This is an excellent way of making it a little bit more even if there is one underdog team and one favorite – and the match up is pretty unequal.

Remember, before you place your wager on any NHL game or outcome, then make sure that sports betting is legal in your state- and make sure that you are betting at a safe, secure and legitimate sports betting website, such as the ones recommended here at our Sports Intel website.

NHL Results

Before placing any wager on NHL results then you will need to make sure that you can access all the required information and statistics to help you make your NHL wagers. Before the game begins, you can check out the line movements at all legit sportsbooks across the United States, and this will help you to understand where other bettors’ money is going. Not only does this help you to understand where the public opinion is but if you are looking to get the best value bet and bet on the underdog, then this is the best way to do it.

Remember, before placing your wager – whether it’s on match winner, over or under, or against the spread, then you will be advised to look at the results and records for both of the teams involved. The more you keep an eye on how well the teams perform against each other and other teams, the better your chance of understanding their form, which will help you to better predict which team has a good chance of winning, whether to bet over or under the line or how to bet against the spread.

National Hockey League Live Scores

Remember, a great way to bet on the game is in-play, which helps bettors to see how the team and players are performing before placing your bet. You can do this by watching the game as it happens and keeping up to date with the NHL live scores. The great thing about NHL live betting is that there are around ten to fifteen minutes after the first two periods to regroup and get your teeth into live betting in the third period. This can really give your betting an extra edge!
