The MLB Break is Over – It’s Time to Get Serious

There are some exciting matchups are set for today in MLB, as the teams look to start the second half of the season on a positive note. Here’s what’s on the horizon for these upcoming contests.

Yankees Take On Astros In Second Game of Twinbill

The second game of today’s doubleheader between the New York Yankees and Houston Astros will start this evening at Minute Maid Park. The Astros are 59-32 before play begins today and have a nine-game lead over the surging Seattle Mariners in the AL West Division. They are also 3-2 versus New York this season.

The Yankees hold the best record in baseball but have slowed down recently and are just 3-5 in their last eight games. Seven of their last ten games have been against the Boston Red Sox, with the Yankees winning four in the series against their division rivals.

They lost a series at home to the Cincinnati Reds in the other three games. New York will start Domingo German for today’s second game. He’s 4-5 with a 4.58 ERA, while the Astros will send Luis Garcia to the hill, who is 7-5 with a 3.65 ERA.

Houston takes this matchup to get back into the win column at home.

Tigers, Athletics Clash In Doubleheader

The Detroit Tigers play the final games of their 13-game road trip with a doubleheader today against the Oakland Athletics. The A’s lead the season series, with four wins in the last five games against the Tigers. Detroit is just one game ahead of the Kansas City Royals for last place in the AL Central and is 12 games behind the Minnesota Twins, who are in first place.

Oakland is the worst team in the American League with a 32-61 record and is 28 games out of first place in the AL West Division, which the Astros are leading. Tarik Skubal will start in the first game for Detroit and is 6-8 with a 4.11 ERA. He’ll go against Zach Logue for the A’s, who is 3-4 with an ERA of 5.16.

Oakland takes the win in a close game.

Montas Returns For A’s In Nightcap against Detroit

The second game of today’s doubleheader between Detroit and Oakland begins this afternoon at the Oakland Coliseum. The Tigers will finally return home after tonight’s game after more than two weeks on the road where they lost eight of eleven games. However, they won six straight games before the current streak of eight losses in the last nine matchups.

Oakland welcomes the return of Frankie Montas, who gets back into the rotation after missing nearly three weeks with a sore shoulder. He’s the lone bright spot on the A’s roster and is their top trade prospect as the August 2 deadline fast approaches. Montas has a 3-9 record and is second on the team with a 3.26 ERA in 17 season starts. He’ll match up against Garrett Hill for the Tigers, who is 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA.

The A’s complete the sweep with a victory in Game 2.
