March Madness is in full swing with the Sweet 16, the NBA season is closing in on the end of its season and MLB is trying to figure out what it will do next. In the meantime, the NFL is getting the ball rolling, ready to attack. Deals are being made and, if one rumor is correct, Tom Brady may become a Miami Dolphin. That, however, isn’t very likely.

Dolphins Making Deals

Barry Jackson, of the Miami Herald, reports that Salvon Ahmed, an exclusive rights free agent, has signed his contract tender for the Dolphins. In 12 games in 2021, the running back had 54 carries and 149 yards. He also tallied 12 catches on 19 targets for 117 yards.

Ahmed will be joining Myles Gaskin, Gerrid Doaks and Chase Edmonds in a depth position in Miami’s backfield. This context limits Ahmed’s fantasy upside, as long as Edmonds and Raheem Mostert are available.

ESPN reported today that the Dolphins have increased cap-relief measures by adjusting safety Clayton Fejedelem’s and cornerback Byron Jones’ contracts. The report states that Jones’ $13-million base salary was converted into a signing bonus. This created $10 million in cap space for 2022. Fejedelem’s contract was also reworked by the team, which resulted in $750,000 being freed.

According to the salary cap report of the NFL Players Association, the Dolphins had $7 million more than their cap when Friday began. The Dolphins needed to make these moves after signing Terron Armstead to an eight-year, $75-million deal. In addition, Tyreek Hill, who was acquired in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, became the highest-paid receiver in NFL history with his four-year, $120-million extension.

Dale Arnold of NESN reports that the Dolphins are looking to pick up Brady, who just un-retired to play in his 23rd NFL season at 45. Set for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Arnold says a source thinks he might become a Fin. Jeff Howe of The Athletic isn’t convinced and expects him to stay with the Bucs.

The Kansas City Chiefs Take a Fall

The Chiefs are making moves to make up for the loss of Hill and they have a problem on the defensive side. Charvarius Ward, the Chiefs’ starting cornerback, has been traded to the San Francisco 49ers. Three-time All-Pro safety Tyrann Matieu is still available as a free agent.

Hill will be missed by Kansas City for obvious reasons. With a combination of explosive speed, sticky hands and great leaping ability, he’s the most explosive receiver in the league.

According to Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Hill decided to chase the money after contract negotiations with the Chiefs had stalled. Drew Rosenhaus, his agent, saw an opportunity for him to increase the price of his client’s contract after the Las Vegas Raiders purchased wide receiver Davante Adam from the Green Bay Packers. It apparently worked.

NFL Considers Overtime Rules Change – Again

Rich McKay, chairman of the NFL competition committee, said that there is “a lot of momentum” for changing NFL overtime rules. However, it is not clear if enough owners will agree to a specific proposal next week when they meet in Palm Beach, FL, for their annual meetings.

There are two proposals on the table. The first, presented by the Philadelphia Eagles and the Indianapolis Colts, would make it mandatory that each team has an overtime possession before going to sudden death. The Tennessee Titans, however, propose a modification that would see mandatory possessions for both teams in a game. However, if the team with the first possession scores a touchdown and converts a 2-point attempt, the opposing team’s possession is nullified.

McKay stated that the competition committee doesn’t endorse either proposal. However, he claimed that the clubs had adequately covered the topic. He’s also confident that finding the necessary 24 votes by owners for either rule will be almost impossible.
