NFL Teams Busy Making Preseason Cuts

NFL Teams Busy Making Preseason Cuts

The NFL preseason is here, which means the regular season is right around the corner. While that’s great news for football fans and sports bettors, it isn’t the best time for some players. All NFL teams fatten up their rosters ahead of the preseason before beginning to hand out pink slips to those who don’t make the cut. The league has set dates for the reductions to be made, and all 32 teams have to have no more than 85 players as of today. By next Tuesday, August 24, five more have to be released. Finally, by the last day of the month, NFL teams can have only 53 men on their rosters. Those players who didn’t shine in the preseason are now looking for new homes, and we’re looking at some of the moves being made.

AFC East Team Cuts

The Buffalo Bills, who beat the Detroit Lions last Friday in their first preseason game, have already released five players. The Bills barely squeaked out the win, 16-15, and will look to see better results going forward. The five players released are:

  • Offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch
  • Offensive lineman Marquel Harrell
  • Offensive lineman Syrus Tuitele
  • Defensive lineman Eli Ankou
  • Linebacker Mike Bell

The Miami Dolphins lost to the Chicago Bears, 20-13, in their preseason game on Friday and have started to look at who needs to go. The team has only announced one cut so far, with tight end Carson Meier being shipped off.

The New York Jets, looking for a rebound season, beat the New York Giants this past Saturday – a potential sign that a shakeup of personnel is making a difference. However, the team was forced to let kicker Chris Naggar go as it cuts its roster.

AFC South Team Cuts

The Indianapolis Colts beat the Carolina Panthers this weekend, but not everyone can be saved. As a result, the team has let go of:

  • Running back Darius Anderson
  • Wide receiver Quartney Davis
  • Tight end Graham Adomitis
  • Cornerback Nick Nelson

The Jacksonville Jaguars were expected to win when they faced the Cleveland Browns, but things didn’t work out as planned. As it looks to recover, the team has cut:

  • Wide receiver Tim Jones
  • Tight end Tim Tebow
  • Defensive tackle Daniel Ross
  • Cornerback DJ Daniel

AFC West Team Cuts

After rolling over the Minnesota Vikings 33-6 on Saturday, the Denver Broncos know that they have plenty of strength. Therefore, the team can rapidly reduce its roster and has already let go of six players:

  • Defensive back Rojesterman Farris
  • Linebacker Peter Kalambayi and
  • Defensive tackle Lorenzo Neal Jr.
  • Wide receiver DeVontres Dukes
  • Running back LeVante Bellamy
  • Defensive lineman Deyon Sizer

The Las Vegas Raiders are also ready for a new season and started by taking out the Seattle Seahawks this weekend. With a strong roster and plenty of players showing off, the Raiders have been able to cut seven:

  • Linebacker Montrel Meander
  • Cornerback Kiondre Thomas

The Baltimore Ravens have also had a good start, taking down the New Orleans Saints. Three players, however, won’t be seen on the sideline going forward:

  • Tight end Eli Wolf
  • Outside linebacker Aaron Adeoye
  • Cornerback Davontae Harris

NFC East Team Cuts

Washington needs to fine-tune its squad if it wants to improve on last year’s performance. It has already announced its cuts, eliminating:

  • Running back Lamar Miller
  • Wide receiver Kelvin Harmon
  • Tight end Nick Guggemos
  • Cornerback Chris Miller
  • Cornerback Greg Stroman

The Philadelphia Eagles, who lost their preseason opener to the Pittsburgh Steelers, have made changes, as well. They have dropped wide receiver Adrian Killins and tight end Caleb Wilson.

The Bears feel good with their performance so far, but still need to let some players go. That’s why the team has released:

  • Wide receiver Justin Hardy
  • Wide receiver Jester Weah
  • Outside linebacker Gage Cervenka
  • Defensive back Dionte Ruffin

For their part, the Vikings are shaping up what they hope will be a strong team after their preseason blowout. This has led to the exit of:

  • Wide receiver Blake Proehl
  • Defensive end Jordan Brailford
  • Kicker Riley Patterson
  • Long snapper Turner Bernard

NFC South Team Cuts

There are still a lot of cuts to be seen on the Atlanta Falcons’ side. However, six players haven’t met expectations so far this season:

  • Wide receiver J’Mon Moore
  • Outside linebacker Bryce Hargrove
  • Offensive tackle William Sweet
  • Defensive lineman John Atkins
  • Linebacker George Obinna
  • Cornerback Marcus Murphy

The Saints are going to have a tough year. They’re dealing with a lot of injuries and player friction already, and took a loss against the Ravens in their first preseason game. Going forward, a number of cuts are coming, but these have already been released:

  • Cornerback Prince Amukamara
  • Defensive end Noah Spence
  • Running back Stevie Scott

NFC West Team Cuts

The San Francisco 49ers fizzled last season and have a lot of work to do if they want to bounce back. Three players have already had their names called for release as the Niners look for better talent:

  • Defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes
  • Linebacker James Burgess Jr.
  • Linebacker Donald Payne

The Seahawks are closing in on their final roster, but have more work to do. For now, six players have been cut:
