NFL Week 3: Fantasy Start ’em/Sit ’em

NFL Week 3: Fantasy Start ’em/Sit ’em

Week 3 of the NFL season is upon us and fantasy owners are still trying to get a feel for what their optimal lineup should look like. With so many toss-up plays on the board, we look at some of this week’s starts and sits and hope everyone picks up a crucial early-season W:

Quarterback

Start

Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys vs. Miami Dolphins

It should be apparent after just two weeks that rolling out every piece of a team’s offense against the Dolphins is a winning strategy. We have now seen in two games that even when way ahead against bad teams, this is Prescott’s show first and foremost and he should continue his rampage against the defenseless Dolphins.

Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks vs. New Orleans Saints

Wilson is in an amazing spot as the Saints are allowing an average of 275 yards passing and two touchdowns through two games and have to deal with the 12th man without Drew Brees. This is a major smash spot for the Seahawks and with Russell’s running ability, there are all sorts of extra points to be scored. DeShaun Watson ran for 40 yards on 4 carries against the Saints in Week 1. Those points could make all the difference as Wilson flirts with a 25+ point afternoon.

Sit

Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles vs. Detroit Lions

Wentz might be feeling spry and chipper this week despite getting bopped in the ribs last week, but the reality is, he has no one other than Nelson Agholor and Zach Ertz to throw to. The Lions aren’t the Steel Curtain, but they can make enough trouble for a second-string receivers corps to ruin Wentz’ day. Don’t let them ruin your day, too.

Running Back

Start

Frank Gore, Buffalo Bills vs. Cincinnati Bengals

With Devin Singletary already ruled out, Gore will be the primary back against a Bengals defense that got destroyed on the ground last week against the 49ers. Gore might be 57-years-old, but he showed last week he still has a nose for the end zone. He’s got a safe floor and the upside for more.

Carlos Hyde, Houston Texans at Los Angeles Chargers

If Week 1 is any guide, there’s a good chance for Hyde to have a nice game here. Marlon Mack carried 25 times and smashed for 174 yards against this defense. Hyde had 20 carries last week, so the volume should be there, and with the Chargers defense properly focused on the passing game, Hyde could go off.

Sit

Devonta Freeman, Atlanta Falcons at Indianapolis Colts

The Falcons insist that Freeman isn’t injured, and that makes it all the more troubling. Freeman has been non-existent through two weeks. You can forgive Week 1, as the Vikings put Atlanta in a deep, early hole. But last week against the Eagles was a good spot for Freeman and he did nothing. He needs at least one good game before he can be trusted right now.

Wide Receiver

Start

Devin Smith, Cowboys vs. Dolphins

Smith was the preseason stud and he showed it was no fluke last week, relieving the injured Michael Gallup and putting up a 3-74-1 line. Now he gets to face the dreadful Dolphins defense and should get ll the targets he can handle. If he’s still on your waiver wire, go get him, as Gallup could be out as many as four weeks.

Philip Dorsett, New England Patriots vs. New York Jets

Remember Week 1, when the Patriots had signed Antonio Brown but he wasn’t eligible to play. That Sunday night against Pittsburgh, Dorsett had a monster game, and you almost wondered why the Pats needed Brown with so much talent already on the field. Well, re-set your expectations and expect the Pats to get Dorsett going again to prove that, nope, they really didn’t need Brown, after all.

Sit

Marquise Goodwin, San Francisco 49ers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

The narrative is that Pittsburgh has a swiss cheese secondary, so fire up all the passing pieces against them. But hold on, the Steelers now have Minkah Fitzpatrick in the secondary, which is an enormous upgrade. This might be a little tougher for the 49ers than anyone anticipates.

Tight End

Start

Jason Witten, Cowboys vs. Dolphins

Seriously, why wouldn’t you play him? Another week, another solid game for the former broadcaster. He’s been targeted four times in each of the first two games and has converted one of them for touchdown in each game. There’s really no reason to think that can’t continue, especially with Dallas facing the “please abuse me” Dolphins defense in Week 3.

Will Dissly, Seahawks vs. Saints

Remember when the Seahawks got Jimmy Graham and it was going to make their tight end position deadly in fantasy? Yeah, didn’t quite work out that way. But, hey, Will Dissly! He went 5-50-2 against the Steelers and that’s pretty Graham-esque.

Sit

Greg Olsen, Carolina Panthers at Arizona Cardinals

Olsen is still banged up, and although he looked great 10 days ago, that was with Cam Newton throwing to him. Maybe Kyle Allen will have similar chemistry, but there’s way too many unknowns here to want to mess with it.
