The coronavirus pandemic has forced a halt to sports and gambling as we know it, so I figured I’d try something new for content today. Instead of picks or gambling news, I’ve put together a list of some my favorite gambling movies. I hope these movies provide you with a little entertainment and inspiration during this crazy time in our lives.
Top 10 Gambling Movies Disclaimer
Disclaimer: there are a ton of great gambling movies out there, so I am not going to be able to list them all out. These are MY ten favorite gambling movies based on just my opinion. We could have differing opinions, and that is all good with me. In fact, I’d love to hear about some of your favorites as well.
To me, all of these movies encapsulate the world of gambling and what it means to be a gambler. Because of that, this list won’t include a movie like Casino, who some will say is a gambling movie. Casino, to me, is a mobster movie.
I also wanted to make this list a little different than some other lists that are currently out there, so instead of a long write-up, I’ve decided to include some of my favorite scenes from these movies. Hopefully these clips entice you to watch.
Some of these movies listed are classics and some might be a little off the beaten path. But, one thing is for sure, they all will get your gambling juices flowing once you are done watching them.
So, grab your popcorn. Here goes:
10. Molly’s Game
This is one of the more recent gambling movies on this list. Some people liked it, some hated it, but I enjoyed it because it was based on a crazy, true story.
9. The Sting
This movie is a sentimental one for me, as I grew up watching it with my late father. My dad loved this movie, so we would watch it every single time it came on TV. This flick has a little bit of everything. Overall, there are scheming and gambling undertones throughout the movie, including this epic Poker scene.
8. The Cooler
This is a great old-school gambling movie with some even better acting. Here is one of the best scenes from the movie:
7. Two for the Money
Two great actors and the movie gives you an inside look at the world of touts and gambling. What more do you need?
Another gambling movie that was based on real life events. This movie was based off of Ben Mezrich’s book “Bringing Down the House”, which portrays the infamous MIT crew that counted cards while playing Blackjack to win a ton of money across multiple casinos.
5. Owning Mahowny
This movie is wild because it is based on a true story about the largest one-man bank fraud in Canadian history. Philip Seymour Hoffman kills it in this role. Buckle up for the ride.
4. The Hustler
Paul Newman plays a pool shark bouncing around from pool hall to pool hall to perfection. His showdown at the end with the legendary Minnesota Fats was epic.
3. Cincinnati Kid
I won’t give away the final table scene in case you have not seen this movie yet. What I will say is that the final table and subsequent scene of this movie encapsulates a “gambler” to perfection.
2. White Men Can’t Jump
Many will say this is a basketball movie and shouldn’t be in a top 10 gambling movies list, but they would are wrong. The entire movie is about gambling. The highs the lows, and everything in between. Here is a fun scene:
Were you expecting anything else in this spot? If so, we can’t be friends anymore.
