MLB Monday with a Couple Freebies

To say that a couple of MLB teams had a little bit of trouble over the weekend would be an understatement. The San Diego Padres had no trouble out of the Colorado Rockies yesterday, winning 8-1. The Texas Rangers took control of their game against the Seattle Mariners, winning 4-3 after an explosion in the ninth inning. Depending on how you look at it, either the LA Dodgers showed why they’re near the top of the National League West standings, or the Arizona Diamondbacks showed why they’re at the bottom. A 13-0 blowout with runs scored in six of the nine innings will leave the D-Backs slithering back under a rock. There’s more action on tap today, with plenty of options for sports bettors.

“Indians” Take on the Blue Jays

The soon-to-be Cleveland Guardians are still the Indians, for now. The new name comes into effect after this season, closing out more than a century of the familiar team. They meet the Toronto Blue Jays today and, with both teams being matched up fairly well, this should be a good game. The Indians are even at 51 and the Blue Jays are at 54-48, coming off a win against the KC Royals yesterday.

The Indians are going to put Eli Morgan on the mound to get things started, and that could cause a problem. He has excellent ball control, but also has a tendency to gift good drives down the middle. He has allowed three or more runs in each of his seven starts this year, which doesn’t bode well. The lines show it, too, with the Blue Jays getting a massive -310 and a -2.5 spread. There isn’t much room for profit there, but taking the Over on the Over/Under of 9.5 (-105) could be a good way to go.

Yankees Host the Orioles

The New York Yankees welcome the Baltimore Orioles today in what should ultimately be a slaughter fest. The Yankees are just barely on the positive side at home, at 27-23, but have been making the swings count. They have already racked up 129 home runs, with Joey Gallo scoring one out of every 13 appearances at the plate. The Orioles, however, are not looking good on the road. With an overall record of 37-67, they’re 20-36 in away games, and that will likely spell trouble today.

Baltimore hopes to have a silver bullet in Jorge Lopez. He’s starting on the mound and, with three consecutive wins to his credit as a starter, the Orioles need every advantage they can muster. If he doesn’t stop giving away runs, though, the silver bullet will be a dud. He’s given up ten in 11 1/3 innings, which isn’t promising. That’s part of the reason oddsmakers have the Yankees at -270 and the Orioles at a distant +200. With everything going for New York, a moneyline bet wouldn’t give up too much. However, take the 1.5-run spread for a little boost and add an Over on the baseball Over/Under of 9.5 (-130) for a little extra bonus.

Phillies and Nationals Ready for a Close Game

The Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals are expected to give fans and gamblers a lot to think about today. Neither team has a winning record – the Phillies sit at 52-53 and the Nats at 49-56 – and these games can often be the most thrilling. This is the first game of a four-game series between the two, and oddsmakers had a difficult time with this one.

The Phillies are going to put lefty Ranger Suarez on the mound to get things going. He has 27 appearances, but all as a reliever, with this marking his first time as a starter. The Nats will put their new rookie, Josiah Gray, on the mound after having only made his first Major League start eight days ago. With that in mind, the Phillies are only slightly tipped as the favorites to win, getting -125 to the Nats’ +100. Taking Washington here could be the way to go, as the Nats are showing better performances against left-handed pitchers. Both teams can put up the hits, which is why taking the Over on the Over/Under of 8.5 (-135) makes a lot of sense.
