Pirates Pull Off MLB Miracle, But Today’s a New Day

Monday features a full schedule of games in the Majors, with a few key series matchups starting this afternoon. Topping yesterday’s games won’t be an easy feat.

Pirates Get Win With No Runs

Yesterday, the Pittsburgh Pirates became just the sixth team in MLB history to win a game without getting a hit. Cincinnati Reds’ rookie Hunter Greene had an outstanding performance until the eighth inning, when he gave up two straight walks with one out. He was replaced by Art Warren, who walked the first batter he faced.

Ke’Bryan Hayes then grounded into a fielder’s choice to score the winning run for Pittsburgh. This feat was last accomplished when the Dodgers won after being no-hit by Jered Weaver and Jose Arredondo in 2008.

The two teams from New York are at the top of the MLB Power Rankings this week. After winning 20 of their last 24 games, the Yankees are ranked first over the Houston Astros. The Mets are the highest-ranked National League team at number four this week. The team recently lost a series for the first time this season, as they now have won nine of the first ten series they’ve played.

Yankees Travel to Face Slumping Orioles

This evening, the New York Yankees will play the first game of their four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. In their last series, New York took three of four against the White Sox and lead the Majors with a 25-9 record. They swept the Orioles in three games in their last series against each other at the end of April.

Baltimore is glad to be back home after being swept in Detroit over the weekend and scoring just three runs in the series. They have lost four out of five games since winning three in a row last week. They are in fourth place in the AL East,  just a half-game ahead of the Boston Red Sox, who are at the bottom of the division.

The Yankees will get a solid start from Luis Severino and get the win tonight in Baltimore.

Angels Look To Take Over Division Lead in Texas

Tonight, the Texas Rangers host their division rivals, the Los Angeles Angels, in the first contest of their three-game series. Los Angeles is second only to the Yankees with 24 wins after taking their last series in Oakland 3-1 against the A’s. Texas salvaged a win in the final game of their series against the Red Sox last night, beating them 7-1 after dropping the first two games.

The Angels are currently tied with the Houston Astros atop the AL West standings and lead the Seattle Mariners by seven games. Their pitching only gave up six runs in the four games against Oakland and is fourth in the Majors in ERA at 3.17. The bats have also been producing as Los Angeles tied with the Brewers and Yankees with 49 home runs and lead all teams with 176 RBIs.

Noah Syndergaard gets the start for the Angels and is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in his five starts, while Jon Gray takes the mound for the Rangers. In his four starts, he’s 0-1 with a 5.51 ERA but has a respectable 1.22 WHIP.

The Angels will win as Syndergaard continues his dominance on the mound.
