Greg Robinson won’t be taking to a football field anytime soon, unless it’s something similar to The Longest Yard.

The (former) Cleveland Browns offensive tackle and Auburn alum is now sitting in a Texas jail after the vehicle in which he was traveling was stopped on suspicion of transporting drugs.  The suspicions were correct, and Robinson and his fellow travelers were found to be in the possession of 157 pounds of marijuana.  On the street, that could go for anywhere from $300,000 to $700,000, depending on the market.

The way law enforcement tells it, Robinson was traveling with Jaquan Tyreke Bray, also a former NFL player, on a lonely stretch of highway in West Texas.  Traveling from Los Angeles to Louisiana, the pair came across a checkpoint near Sierra Blanca, which lies around 83 miles southeast of El Paso, and a canine search alerted officers to the possible presence of drugs, forcing a secondary, more detailed search of the car.

During that search, officers found a few heavy duffel bags that contained strange black bags.  When the vacuum-sealed bags were tested, the contents were found to be marijuana.  The search also discovered glass jars and packaging equipment, as well as $3,100 in cash.

Robinson and Bray weren’t traveling alone.  They were with another individual, who hasn’t been named, who reportedly drives for Uber.  He is known to Robinson and often was called on to drive the player around, as well as to run errands for him and his family.  Robinson had asked the individual to claim possession of the cannabis, in exchange for money, but he had refused – claims he was able to support through text messages.

Robinson had gotten off to a good start when he entered the NFL after completing his run at Auburn.  He was selected by the LA Rams as the number two pick in the draft, but went to the Detroit Lions in 2017 after not being able to live up to the expected hype with the Rams.  He made his way to the Browns, where he continued to show a performance that wasn’t representative of a number-two pick.  He had already been told by the team, after the end of the NFL season, that his services would no longer be required by the Browns, and the unrestricted free agent was in need of a new team before the latest turmoil.

Bray also went to Auburn before heading to the NFL, but his experience was short-lived.  He only lasted for three seasons in the NFL before heading to the AFL and, most recently, the Canadian Football League.  His continued participation with the league’s Montreal Alouettes is undoubtedly as questionable as Robinson’s presence in the NFL.

A Department of Justice press release on the subject states, “The criminal complaint charges the defendants with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

According to the federal criminal complaint, on Monday evening, the defendants approached the Sierra Blanca Checkpoint station, where a U.S. Border Patrol canine unit alerted on their vehicle.  Agents asked the driver (Bray) to part the vehicle in the secondary inspection area for further investigation.  A subsequent inspection of the vehicle by agents revealed the presence of approximately 157 pounds of marijuana inside several large duffle bags in the rear cargo area.”

The two players, Robinson and Bray, are now in an El Paso County jail and have been charged with marijuana possession with the intention to sell and/or distribute.  They were held without bond while waiting to appear before a judge and, once they finally get their day in court, they’re looking at up to 20 years behind bars.
